 Rooftop
temperatures are as much as 60 degrees
Fahrenheit (F) cooler with a white sheet
compared with a black EPDM, modified
bitumen, or built-up system.
The trend toward Energy Star-labeled, compliant
reflective roofing is a huge benefit for
TPO.
This high, sustained reflectivity is saving
significant energy and money for building
owners all over the United States. Because
the TPO roofing system is
mechanically-attached and insulation can be
placed under the membrane during the roof
installation, you can reduce your
building’s heat loss in the winter.
White TPO carries the EnergyStar label for
approved energy saving roofing products. The
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's
EnergyStar labeling program identifies
roofing products that can reduce energy
consumption and reduce problems associated
with heat build-up, smog and air pollution.
- Resistant to fire, chemicals, grease,
high winds, and punctures.
- Installed without disruption to
building operations.
- Highly reflective. The white membrane
delivers real cost savings for building
owners and managers.
- Code compliant.
- Professionally installed by authorized
contractors.
- Backed by the industry’s best
warranties.
TPO membranes are
installed fully-adhered,
mechanically-attached or ballasted.
Fully-adhered means that the roof is
"glued" to the substrate using a
special adhesive. What actually happens is
the glue creates a chemical bond with the
membrane. Ballasted simply means the
membrane is loose laid over the top of the
roof, sealed at all penetrations and around
the perimeter, and then a ballast is put on
it to hold it in place. Ballast usually
consists of smooth, round, river rock
2" - 3" in diameter and is applied
at a rate of 1,000 to 1,200 pounds per roof
square (100 sq. ft.). Sometimes concrete
pavers are used in their place. These
average 20 pounds per square foot.
Mechanically-attached membranes are those
that use some type of special screw-type
fastener to secure it. The type of fastener
will depend on the type of substrate but all
fasteners are generally screw-type
fasteners.
TPO
now has a 15-year performance history under
its belt in the United States, and the
majority of roofers is giving the product a
thumbs-up. According to RSI's 2007 State of
the Industry Report, approximately 75
percent of commercial roofing contractors
are completely satisfied with the
performance of TPO, and this number has
grown each year. In 2006 the majority of
RSI's readers said they saw the most
opportunity in the single-ply roofing sector
— led by TPO — which underscores the
encouraging industry statistics previously
mentioned. CONTACT
